taking it all in (gathering information)

That’s right. I am taking it all in. Because when I write a screenplay now I can put down something like “a Sedona sunrise”–I know what a Sedona sunrise looks like. People sometimes think that skill in youth is good enough, but it’s not. Disciplinary proficiencies aren’t the same as being able to make a decision (wisely). So many people are proficient at writing, or running. but how many Hemingways have honed it to where they can write Old Man in the Sea. It strikes me now that writing that thing was so much more essentially about making judicious choices than about being able to do something. It was about knowing what to do, of all the things that you can.
